Core Concept

The Holistic View mental model emphasizes seeing things as integrated systems composed of interconnected elements, relationships, and the underlying principles that govern them. It goes beyond isolated examination of individual events or parts, instead adopting a macro perspective to understand how components interact and influence the functioning of the whole. This way of thinking holds that everything in the world exists as systems shaped by patterns and rules; therefore, to truly understand and solve problems, one must recognize not only visible elements but also invisible connections and the deeper principles behind them. Individuals with a holistic view can expand their thinking progressively—from points to lines, lines to surfaces, and surfaces to three-dimensional systems. They can detect subtle signs revealing larger trends, grasp the essence of issues, anticipate potential impacts and future developments, and thus make more comprehensive and effective decisions.

Application Examples

  1. Corporate Strategic Planning: When formulating business strategies, focusing solely on market share or short-term profits while ignoring factors such as supply chains, employee morale, technological trends, or the macroeconomic environment may lead to strategic failures. Applying a holistic view enables companies to integrate all internal and external factors, developing strategies that are more resilient and sustainable.
  2. Disease Diagnosis and Treatment: In diagnosing and treating illnesses, focusing only on a single symptom while neglecting a patient’s overall health, lifestyle, or psychological stress may fail to identify root causes or result in relapse. A physician using a holistic approach comprehensively evaluates the patient’s physical, mental, and social conditions, providing personalized, integrated treatment plans for better outcomes.

Key Points

  1. Recognize that things exist as interconnected and interdependent systems.
  2. Focus on the whole rather than isolated parts, understanding how components work together.
  3. Identify the deep patterns and dynamic changes driving system behavior.
  4. Avoid treating symptoms in isolation—seek out root causes.
  5. Apply this mindset to complex problem analysis, strategic decision-making, and system optimization.
