Core Concept

The prioritization mental model is a framework guiding how we make decisions about what to do first. It emphasizes making choices based on urgency, importance, and difficulty when faced with numerous tasks and options. Human instinct tends to favor activities that require less mental effort or offer quick feedback. However, this model encourages us to step out of our comfort zones and prioritize tasks that are right but difficult, consistently following through to ensure sustained personal and organizational growth and maturity.

Application Examples

  1. The Story of Rocks, Sand, and Water: This classic example vividly illustrates the importance of prioritization by showing how rocks, sand, and water can be sequentially poured into a jar. If the large rocks (the most important tasks) aren’t placed first, they won’t fit later. This teaches us to handle mission-critical tasks early—otherwise, we risk losing the opportunity altogether.
  2. Daily Personal Task Management: In everyday life, when balancing fitness, work, and social activities, applying prioritization means completing tasks that contribute most to long-term goals and require greater effort—such as finishing an important work project before exercising—rather than indulging in entertainment first, which may lead to critical tasks being neglected.

Key Takeaways:
1. Identify and differentiate tasks by urgency, importance, and difficulty to inform decision-making.
2. Overcome natural instincts by prioritizing challenging tasks that benefit long-term development.
3. Use "endgame thinking" and "longboard thinking" to assess the true significance of tasks.
4. Consistently implement prioritized decisions and cultivate them into habits.
5. Avoid getting trapped in trivial matters to enhance decision efficiency and productivity.
