Psychological projection is a defense mechanism in which individuals attribute their own unacceptable thoughts, feelings, traits, or impulses to others, as a way to protect the self from anxiety, guilt, or shame. This process typically occurs unconsciously; by externalizing internal conflicts, individuals avoid directly confronting their own flaws or negative emotions, thereby maintaining a relatively positive self-image. While it helps reduce inner conflict, it can lead to distorted perceptions of others and interpersonal difficulties.
