Core Concept

The natural selection mental model is a powerful framework that reveals how complex systems evolve and optimize through simple mechanisms. It hinges on three key elements: high-fidelity replication, where entities within a system can be accurately copied; variation, meaning small, random changes occur during the copying process; and fitness, referring to the differing abilities of copies to survive and reproduce in a given environment. When all three conditions are met, entities better suited to their environment—and thus more successful at replicating—will increase in number over time, while less-adaptive ones gradually disappear. Starting from seemingly random variations, this process can generate increasingly optimized versions, explaining the underlying logic behind phenomena such as biodiversity, cultural development, and technological advancement.
