Core Concept

Hans Christian Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes reveals the core logic of common knowledge. Private knowledge means that A knows something, and B also knows it; common knowledge goes further—it is an infinitely recursive state of awareness: A knows that B knows, B knows that A knows that B knows, and this awareness continues ad infinitum. Common knowledge does not require infinite mental simulation to achieve; it can be instantly transmitted through a single public event, such as someone uttering a straightforward statement in plain view. Even when private knowledge is widely shared, the distinction between it and common knowledge is far more than a mere logical nuance—it enables individuals to coordinate their behavior collectively and, at times, even disrupt established social realities. Common knowledge is fundamental to understanding human social life. It underlies the tacit understanding in everyday conversation, the coordination of group behavior, the formation of social conventions, and the construction of civil order. It explains why "stating an obvious truth" can transform an entire situation and helps resolve numerous puzzles in both public life and personal relationships.
