Core Concept

The margin of safety is a mental model designed to ensure that systems can withstand stress and unpredictable circumstances. It refers to a meaningful gap between the actual capacity a system can handle and the expected load it is likely to face. Like a shoulder on a highway, the margin of safety provides extra room to deal with unexpected events, ensuring safety amid uncertainty. It acts as a buffer between safety and danger, order and chaos, success and failure—preventing a system from easily tipping from one state to another and thereby avoiding damage.
