Core Concept

The anti-entropy mental model applies the physical principle of "entropy increase" in reverse to life and work. The law of entropy increase states that in an isolated system, things naturally evolve from order to disorder. In contrast, the anti-entropy model emphasizes resisting this disorder by continuously performing "work" (building dissipative structures) and maintaining an "open system" (avoiding path dependence). By drawing energy and information from the external environment, it enables a transition from chaos to order and from decline to development. At its core, this model relies on proactive investment, continuous learning, and adaptation to sustain and enhance a system's vitality and organization.

Application Examples

  1. Personal Growth and Health Management: A person who runs regularly uses physical exertion to transform consumed proteins into muscle, improves blood circulation, and prevents conditions like diabetes and obesity, resulting in a leaner physique. This is a classic example of a dissipative structure—achieving bodily "anti-entropy" through sustained effort.
  2. Business Development and Innovation: In the early stages of a startup, all employees work together to carve out a path from market chaos—an evolution from disorder to order. As the company grows, continued innovation, breaking out of comfort zones, staying open, and adapting to market changes help prevent stagnation and decline, enabling ongoing "anti-entropy" growth.

Key Points

  1. Recognize that everything tends toward disorder, and actively take steps to counteract this tendency.
  2. Build dissipative structures through continuous "work," investing consistent effort to maintain system vitality.
  3. Maintain an open system, avoid path dependence, and draw new information and energy from external sources.
  4. Actively step out of comfort zones, enhancing cognitive abilities through learning and practice.
  5. Apply anti-entropy principles when solving problems or making decisions to achieve strategic optimization and development.
